Hello there, my name is Alex Pooley and I'm a freelance web developer residing in Perth, Western Australia. My passion is in the development of web sites that solve everyday problems. Internet Web Sites

I make income from a few areas, and one of those areas is a web design business for small business. The sites I build tend to be brochure ware style sites which are basically static lead generating pages with contact/booking/etc forms. You can find my Pooley Design business web site here, and here’s a link to Perth Defensive Driving School, a client of mine.

I also operate a blog called Stop-Global-Warming.com. The site is an experiment in building content based on keyword research which I hope to eventually turn profitable.

Internet Applications & Dynamic Web Sites

This is where I prefer to concentrate my efforts as this excites and interests me. When I’m working on my own projects in this area I always like to keep an eye on turning a profit with a rational business model.

My Projects

I only have a couple of applications officially released, though I have a couple being privately tested and even more still at various stages in the lab. Of the projects released, the most notable are probably:

A web site monitoring application that will SMS or E-mail you when your site goes offline. The system was created using Ruby On Rails and includes a full rspec test suite.

Map-of is a deceptively simple data mashup site. This site contains masses of information for over 3 million cities and towns. This site also runs on Ruby On Rails.

Paid Projects

Human Resources Benchmarking: A company focused on helping other companies retain staff. This was a large project that I built from scratch with Myles Eftos. The system is run as a managed software solution that HRB can on sell to other companies. This system was created using Ruby On Rails with 2:1 testing to code ratio.

OccuWeb: An managed solution from OccuMed. This software manages health surveys with an occupational health angle. The core system was built using HOBO, and I was required to add some fixups, tuning, feature additions, and also required to setup hosting and server and service monitoring.

An online social network aggregation service. Lukup required the creation of a chat network built from the ground up. This work is still on-going, but I have so established a Jabber based network with a dynamic AJAX style chat interface, as well as a server side PHP interface for non-javascript enabled devices such as some mobile phones.

Others

There’s a lot of stuff that I’ve worked on over the years. Many have been private tools that I haven’t released or shared, such as my domain name mining tool, or my keyword research tools. This has actually been the bulk of my work as I like to experiment and push the boundaries.

Code
